Force Feeding Scrap Tires

I was doing a video shoot for Yahoo! News this afternoon. I was at the former Ruddiman Middle School (7350 Southfield Fwy.) to file a report about the school being added to the National Register of Historic Places. While there, I found a couple hundred scrap tires that had been illegally dumped behind it.

Needless to say, I was not happy. The video below clearly shows my exact reaction.

I attended Ruddiman in 1971-2 for 8th grade. I don't remember the building as being particularly noteworthy or historic. In fact, I remember it as having various additions tacked onto an older building - with no attempt to blend everything together. Why is it getting this designation?

For starters, the original building is one of oldest in the area.

Most the old DPS buildings are getting designated. It makes them easier to redevelop as something other than a school.
