Tax Cuts On Their Way

According to a press release issued by Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick, the City's Finance Department has started mailing applications for a discount on property taxes. Individuals who live in the Warrendale neighborhood, west of the Southfield Freeway, are eligible for discount on their property taxes beginning in 2008.

The Detroit City Council has approved Mayor Kilpatrick's proposal to designate 22 more neighborhoods as Neighborhood Empowerment Zones. This approval will bring property tax discounts of 18 - 35% for eligible homeowners, provided that they make at least $500 in improvements to their homes. The discounts last for up to 15 years.

However, the discount isn't automatic. You have to apply in order to get it. These applications should arrive shortly and are due no later than October 1, 2007.
