Detroit Will Preserve Rouge Park

Detroit will preserve park - 10/26/06 - The Detroit News Online

Loren Jackson, director of Detroit's Recreation Department, announced yesterday that the City has agreed to stop any deal to sell 115 acres of parkland in Rouge Park to developers.

This is terrific news, in my opinion, because the sale was simply a badly thought out move. However, Rouge Park is still threatened by vandalism and neglect.

I still believe that the best way to address those concerns is to transfer control of the park to a private conservancy - similiar to what was set up for Campus Martius Park and the Detroit Riverfront - and allow some residential and/or commericial development in the park; just think it's location and type through much more carefully.
