Cool Cities Won't Come to Warrendale

I got a phone call this morning from a woman at the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth. Governor Jennifer Granholm will annouce the designees for her 2006 Cool Cities awards soon. Warrendale, unfortunately, will not be one of them.

The WCO applied to have Warrendale so designated because it unlocks a $100,000 grant for projects like completing the MMBA Bike Trail in River Rouge Park as well as upgrading the facilities at the Lloyd H. Ryan Playground. More importantly, it would have given us priority access to 178 different programs from the State of Michigan.

This is, of course, a set-back for the neighborhood. Regardless, the WCO will keep looking for ways to upgrand Ryan Park and the MMBA will keep looking for funds to finish their bike trail. As for the 178 programs, we're still eligible to apply for them. If most of the designated "Cool Cities" are arts projects, which is what has happened in the past, there won't be much competition for the programs that would service Warrendale anyway.
