Are You a Detroiter?

The Thinker - Photo by Brian Hillegas
I have come to the conclusion that one isn't really a Detroiter until he or she has at least thought about leaving the Motor City. This should include considering both where one will move to after Detroit and how such a move should be explained to your friends and family.

For what it's worth, I occasionally consider a move to California. There are, of course, some distinct advantages to such a move. The weather is better in California. Also, unlike in Michigan, no one in Sacramento tries to make their state into another version of Mississippi.

Plus, given the fetish that our political establishment has people with Detroit ties who no longer live in Michigan, there is a high probability that people would more inclined take my suggestions about improving Detroit to heart if I were living in California.

I will let everyone dwell on the irony of that last one for a moment.
