According to sources within the Detroit Water & Sewage Department, employees who were represented by AFSCME Local 207 did not show up to work today. This is the union local that voted earlier in the week to go on strike in response to plans to outsource 81% of all jobs in the department and was scheduled to picket at the waste water treatment plant, according to a statement from the union.
It's not clear whether this is the beginning of a full-fledged strike by the union against DWSD, which could last for weeks or months, or if this is a smaller "sick-out", which normally serves as a warning shot.
More on this as the story develops.
Update @ 5:56 p.m.
