Mayor Dave Bing, Police Chief Ralph Godbee, Fire Commissioner Donald Austin, and Lt. Col. Daniel Atkinson of the Michigan State Police crime lab toured what will be the new public safety headquarters earlier today. The Detroit Free Press has a full story about this as well as numerous photos that are available here.
The new headquarters is expected to be completed in April 2013. Everyone should be moved into the facility by June 2013. Quite frankly, I'm excited about this new facility.
For years now, Chief Godbee has had to endure the indignity of willfully ignoring his job responsibilities in a crumbling building from the 1920s. In a mere 23 months from now, he will be able to ignore those same responsibilities in a brand spanking new building.
I'm pretty sure that this is the crowning moment that Augustus Woodward was dreaming of when he rebuilt our fair city more than 200 years ago.
