Property Tax Appeals

Any property owner in Detroit who believes that their property is assessed at too high of a value has until Friday, February 15 to appeal their assessment. The process for doing this begins by filing an appeal with the Assessments Division of the City of Detroit's Finance Department. This has to be done in Room 824 of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center (2 Woodward Ave. in downtown Detroit).

My understanding is that the Assessments Division almost always denies your initial appeal. However, once they deny your appeal, a property owner has the option to take it to the Board of Review where your odds are much better.
