Mail Bag: WCCU

WHERE AND WHEN DID THE WCCU GO..
An anonymous reader already answered a portion of Mr. Malhalab's question in the comments section, but I wanted to expand on it a bit.

The Warrendale Community Credit Union became a part of Community Choice Credit Union in the late 1990s or early in the year 2000. If I recall correctly, they were promised expanded benefits to credit union members as well as more stability for the credit union itself as a part of the merger.

Unfortunately, Community Choice subsequently closed the location in 2004. I heard two different reasons for the closures: one that it closed because they weren't able to purchase the laundromat next door so they could create a drive-thru and the other that they were simply tired of being robbed.

As for Community Choice Credit Union itself, they are still around. Their headquarters are in Livonia. They maintain 21 different locations in Michigan, with Redford being the closest one to the Warrendale neighborhood.

When Community Choice closed I wrote them and asked why they were abandoning the poorest neighborhood with most minorities. I stated that a community based cradit union should not be out to make a huge profit and serve its members equally. I was told that it was declining in business. And they only needed two branches to serve their customer base.

Then I saw them open up a second branch in Livonia, so I called them. They now had three branches with none by Warrendale. They could not answer my question.

Since then they have had a few mergers.

I am still a member (hey they give great CD rates). They are now merging with the Detroit Research Credit Union out of the Ren Cen, so at least they will have a branch I can use without driving far.
